We are Northern Gas Networks

We deliver gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses in the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire. That’s around 6.7 million individual customers.

We don’t generate or sell the gas, but we transport it to homes and businesses in our region through a vast network of underground pipes.

In fact, we own and maintain more than 37,000km of gas pipes - enough to stretch from Leeds to Sydney and back again.

We cover large cities like Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds, York, Hull, and Bradford, and our work extends to rural areas like North Yorkshire and Cumbria.

We provide the region’s gas emergency service – responding rapidly to gas emergencies around the clock. We’re also replacing old gas mains with over 3,800 km of modern new ones, so the communities we serve receive a safe and reliable gas supply for generations to come.

We value our community

Everything we do is focused on keeping our customers safe and warm, our colleagues healthy and inspired and delivering outstanding, sustainable value ensuring that we lead the way in establishing a fairer, greener future for all our Northern communities.

We translate this into a unique set of values that reflect and reinforce our culture:

  • Trailblazing: We’re putting people first and championing collaborative thinking and revolutionary practices every step of the way.
  • Intellectually curious: We believe in the power of combining intelligence, experience and curiosity to deliver innovative, invigorating, future proof and sustainable ideas.
  • Community focused: We’re loyal, supportive and respectful towards one another and the community we live and work in
  • Empowered: We encourage individuality, teamwork, passion, courage, new experiences, growth and change
  • Heartfelt: We want everyone to be recognised for their passionate, proud and heartfelt desire to do their very best.

Apprenticeships

Each year a number of apprentices join our business across a variety of roles, from engineering and innovation, to finance and business administration. Our apprentices have a really important part to play at NGN and are supported by internal and external learning opportunities. Training is both on the on-the-job learning from experienced mentors and in classrooms through local college or providers. We value the new ideas and energy our apprentices bring - they help us challenge our thinking whilst learning at pace and getting stuck into a variety of different roles and projects!

Wellbeing

The health and wellbeing of our colleagues is very important to us. That’s why we provide our colleagues and their direct families with access to a 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme, providing a variety of resources to help support wellbeing, including confidential counselling. In addition we have a team of Wellbeing Champions located across our network, a Wellbeing Hub which provides a wealth of information on how to improve mental and physical health, and a self-help portal for musculoskeletal health.
